The fascinating and complex human
circulatory system comes to life in an exciting multimedia
science education program called My Blood, Your
Blood. A national team of scientists, physicians and
educators developed the comprehensive program. It
uses animation and live-action video, classroom materials
and internet discovery to educate students about the
circulatory system, the lifesaving
role of various blood components, the importance of
volunteer blood donation and child and teen actors who
interact with animated blood cell characters. Rory
the Red Cell illustrates how red cells carry oxygen
throughout the bloodstream, Granville the
White Cell shows
how white cells fight infections, and the Sticklers
demonstrate how Platelets form blood clots.
In addition to teaching the basics
about
blood, the education program also highlights the vital
role that blood centers play as institutions that are essential
to society. In so doing, MBYB describes the
technology involved in blood safety, from collection
through testing, distribution and tracking.
Finally, the program will introduce and emphasize
the importance of the volunteer
blood donor. MBYB
will be implemented through community blood centers
nationwide with the potential to reach 60 million students
within the areas served by America Blood Center members.
The program will be made available by the Western Kentucky Regional
Blood Center to every school for use in the fourth through
ninth grades.
By learning about the circulatory system
and the biology of blood, students across the nation will
learn the important role blood plays in modern medical
practice. In addition, these students will benefit by
learning about the selfless act of volunteer blood
donation. My Blood, Your Blood also is a powerful
tool to help ensure that today's patients and those of
tomorrow can depend upon an adequate blood supply for
their transfusion needs.
